What is it?
Since 1948, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institution hosts the annual Met Gala, an extravagant fundraiser for the Museum’s Costume Institute exclusive to the highest names in fashion, film, music, and art.
Being a themed Gala, the night is featured with a new topic every year. In their biggest showing, the museum featured an ode to the great Alexander Mcqueen and his Savage Beauty Collection in 2011. The fundraiser collected over 12 million dollars that year. The museum’s Andrew Bolton is the curator of the art pieces that will be displayed each night.
This year features the theme: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. It will be centered on the museum’s medieval art collection and address liturgical and theological art. Designers to be featured include, Cristobaldi Balenciaga, Donatella Versace, and exhibit pieces from Chanel and Galliano. The theme will not be without controversy because of the fusion of religious artifacts alongside fashion art. Some artifacts that have been said to make an appearance will be the bishop’s hat of Pope Leo XIII from the Vatican as well as Pope Benedict XV’s cape of white threaded with real gold.
For the past 23 years, the chair of the event has been entrusted to the great Dame Anna Wintour. She is the US Vogue’s Editor in Chief and chooses the co-chairs each year. Many of them have been influencers, or musical artists. For example, Rihanna, and Beyonce.
Those who have the honor of making the guest list are truly lucky, but for those from the outside, tickets range from $30,000 to $275,000 for a table. Only the biggest influencers in the sphere of art, music, fashion, and even television personalities are included in the exclusive guest list.
In conclusion, this year on Monday May 7th, 2018, be sure to tune in on E! Network to see the live broadcast of the event and watch the many stars on the Red Carpet.
